Nox Wrote:Keyboard still feels more natural to me than a wheel and pedals... I think the ultimate racing controller for me is a gamepad with analogue sticks and analogue shoulder buttons like the Xbox 360 controller. The $30 I spent on a genuine 360 controller is some of the best money I ever spent on a gamepad for the PC, second would be my venerable Logitech Rumblepad Extreme but I don't think they even sell them anymore.

I really wish I could get into wheel and pedals on a racing game, I've got a perfectly good Logitech MOMO wheel that I've had for 4 years and has been used maybe twice... and not used at all in the last three years.

I wish I could afford a new Logitech G27 wheel and then the wood/space to build a dedicated racing desk Wink

and i'm guessing the reason you can't get used to the wheel is a lack of driving on your part Wink

I recently downloaded and installed Research and Development for HL2, and it's pretty cool. Hard as heck at some points, but very enjoyable.

For those that have never played it, think Half-Life 2 with the same enemies, no guns, and a shitload more puzzles.

The demo for that was pretty cool. Unfortunately my laptop (where I DLed it) couldn't really run the game; it kept stuttering I might grab that for myself (for the desktop) for X-Mas.

edit: Still playing R&D, just got "Mr. Whirly", a gravity gun-made vehicle with horrible steering.

I played Garry's Mod. Interesting to say the least, and it was only 5 bucks.

Plants vs Zombies is at the top of my gaming list right now.. Hella fun. Cool

Tried out Need for speed shift today. I like it, not as fun as Undergound was. but still, the controls are smooth as is the graphics on this GTX 275 @ 4x4 AA/AF.

I finally found my copy of Underground and got it installed, updated, and patched for widescreen 1080p support.

Also installed NFS: Most Wanted but after spending a few minutes on a quick race I'm not sure I like it.

Still playing Farmville, I am a hopeless adict when it comes to that game. :p

Still on the second playthrough of Borderlands, but New Super Marios Bros. Wii and Super Mario Galaxy are taking up some of my time too.

I started a character in Dragon Age: Origins a few weeks back, but that game looks like it'll take up a lot of my time, so I started a Mass Effect character as well.

Some rendering settings and quality testing I did this morning. Tell me which video looks best to you quality-wise please?

Info: The first two videos were recorded at 60 frames per second with FRAPS and then rendered down to 30FPS using frame blending in Sony Vegas. The remaining videos were recorded by FRAPS at 30 frames per second and only differ in the bandwidth and 'smoothnes' settings used to encode to WMVi9 format.

I can't watch 1080p on my laptop. Otherwise I'd be all over it like your ass on a race course, Nox. Big Grin

edit: This may be a dumb question, but if I don't click the 'HD' button, will it just display in 720p? And does that totally defeat the purpose of what you're trying to do?

You can hit the HD button and it will display at the max resolution your display allows (once you hit the 'fullscreen' button afterwards. In fact when you hit the HD button it SHOULD bring up a pull-up menu that allows you to select 720p or 1080p.

In any case the resolution has little effect on what I'm trying at here, I'm mainly concerned about wether people like the non frame blended version (straight 30fps) better than the frame blended version (60fps down to 30fps).

My personal opinion is that the frame blended versions (the first two videos) bring a real sense of speed and actually give the percieved effect of a video that' moving faster than 30fps, but at the same time the straight native 30fps videos have a merit in crispness of frames since there is no blending going on.

I just checked and this option is only on the YouTube page and not on the embedded video. 720p is the "low quality" version, while 1080p is the HD version.

NFS: MW...

I didn't like it either.
Haven't installed underground yet, but I want to. Maybe as soon as I get home.

God, I love my HD 5850.

I've finished BioShock and I'm now on DiRT 2.Though to be honest, this is the kind of game I can play while I'm going through other games since "story mode" is basically becoming the best racer in the world. There's no real plot to it, which means I can pick it up for a race or two and then stop; there's no compelling reason to constantly play it other than being a fan of the genre.

I haven't really "gotten serious" about gaming in a while, so blowing through BioShock in 19 hours (all fun, mind you) over the past week has kind of left me with no desire to get into another story-based game for a bit. So DiRT 2 is perfect right now.

Plus, there's a rival named Katie Justice, and that's hilariously awesome.

Might even have to drag out the ol' Logitech MOMO Force for this...

DiRT 2 is fun as hell, but I've swapped my "main" game to Batman: Arkham Asylum. Feels like a console port, but the story and action are pretty good. There are some very 'Batman' moments and it's cool.

Tried to play CoD:MW2, but for some reason I can't make it past that first battle (the one with the enemies on the roof shooting RPGs at the hummers). Game hangs. Thinking I'll start GTA4.

<edit> I bought CoD:MW2 on Steam ... didn't acquire it from Mexico. Didn't think software you buy months after it comes out had this sort of trouble anymore.

Nox - I don't know if you still have the RumblePad, but that controller works pretty well with DiRT2. You have to program it in-game of course, but after that, it's great. And a ton better than just the keyboard.

You know I actually went looking for one today online and couldn't find one. They've got newer ones but the button layout isn't the same and from what I've played with in the store none of them 'feel' like the Wingman Rumble FX did.

Not that I could afford it, anyway. I am broke totally for the next two months at least. Man I'll be glad when my big 'debt' is paid off.

I need to try out these other two knock off controllers I have people have given me. One of them is this stupid Nyko with a spring loaded retractable cable that is totally ghey, but the actual controller has a great hand feel. The other is one my little brother gave me and I haven't actually looked at yet.

DiRT2 is a part of the GFWL grouping, so I'm pretty sure that translates into automatic 360-controller support.

Yeah ever since doing that video the other day I've been itching to get back to Portal. The whole achievements thing they've added to Valve games is neat as hell.

You gotta remember the last time I played was back when TOB was first released and Portal was new to everyone, and there was no achievements system in place for ANY Steam distributed game.

Hard to believe it's been what, at least two years since TOB was released?

Oh and I just figured out the good old Wingman Rumblepad wouldn't work for me anyway, at least not for racers. I must have my analogue shoulder buttons for that!

Overwheat, what video editing software are you using? I see frame interpolation (blending) that indicates the original video was recorded at 60FPS, then downsampled to 30FPS (either by your software or by YouTube).

If you're editing in Sony Vegas, right click on your movie clips on the timeline, and under the switches menu select 'Disable Resampling' and it will not use that yucky frame blending when it converts the video to 30FPS.

Aside from that, awesome video! Was it done with the rig in your sig (I'm a poet and didn't know it...).

Are you recording to your primary (OS) drive or a secondary drive. Remember that FRAPS works best when you have it record to a second hard drive (a drive that Windows isn't on and isn't using for virtual memory) - that way FRAPS doesn't have to fight with Windows for disk access time.
