What have you bought lately?

  • 2x Dell UltraSharp U2719D
  • 1x Dell MDS19 dual monitor stand
  • DIYPC D480-W-RGB case
  • 2x APC 6-outlet power strip
  • 2x EDIMAX Technology AC600 USB wireless adapter
  • 2x mouse pad with wrist rest (one black, one blue)
  • 2x Cougar Deathfire EX gaming keyboard/mouse
  • be quiet! Dark Rock Slim
  • be quiet! Pure Rock Slim
The monitors+stand are mine.

One power strip, wireless adapter, keyboard/mouse, the black mouse pad, and the Dark Rock Slim are going to be Mario's. I built a "new" computer using my old rig's motherboard. He will help me change out the water cooler that's in there now (old and has some more bubbles than I'd like inside) with the air cooler, will remove the GeForce GTX 970 that's in there now, and will install the GeForce GTX 1070 I had in my old rig. He will also get my LG 2560x1080 screen.

The other power strip, wireless adapter, keyboard/mouse, blue mouse pad, case, and Pure Rock Slim are going to be Mia's. She is 6, it is time for her to build her own PC. She'll be getting the motherboard that used to be in my file server -- the ASRock Z68 Extreme 4 Gen 3/i7-2600k/32GB of RAM. However, it was overheating and throttling, because it looks like the coolant was leaking out of the radiator (there's some corrosion near one of the barbs), so she's getting the Pure Rock Slim. She will be getting the GTX 970 and my LG 1920x1080 screen. She fully intends to run the case with purple illumination at all times, and wants the green LED on the edge of the video card to be on at all times as well, because she is on a purple & green kick at the moment. Power supply will be the Seasonic SS-750KM that was in the server as well, and she'll be using either the server's 250GB 850 Evo boot volume or its 500GB 840 Evo VM boot volume, depending on which one has more life left in it.

I intend to use Pop!_OS 20.04 with the Dash to Panel extension installed on both machines, but I may spring for Windows 10 Home licenses ... Mario enjoys playing Minecraft with me on a Bedrock server I imaged in the basement (it runs just fine in an LXC container running Ubuntu Focal), and Mia wants to play as well.

you could try https://digitalproductkey.com/windows-10...-home.html

only 35 bucks, although I am digging into it, cause I bought 2 win 10 pro keys for insanely cheap.

And I bought these for the kids.

MSI GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Ventus XS ... holy shit that's a mouthful. It's a GeForce 1650 with 4GB of DDR6. The GeForce GTX 1070 in Mario's computer is shitting all over itself, so I'll rip that one out and slap this one in to keep it running. It's not the best card out there, but it's about all I can afford at the moment.

1660 Ti would be nice, but I also wanted a card that didn't need any additional power.

Synology DS418 and an isolation/reflection filter for my mic. Going to shuck my 10TB USB 3.0 enclosure and throw a pair of spare hard disks into the Synology and use it for a whole-house backup unit. Not going to use any of the hardware transcoding features and such ... strictly for file storage at this point.

Fractal Design Define 7 (the regular one, not the Compact or XL, and without a window) and six Noctua NF-A14 fans.

Retiring the RGB ... at least, the components within my computer. A big steel side panel with some thick sound-insulating foam on it will render the glowing components useless. That, and let's call a spade a spade, Noctua fans are ugly and I wouldn't want them illuminated.

Think I'll transplant my son's PC components into my current case.

New laptop for the development manager
Lenovo T15
  • i7-10610U
  • 32GB RAM
  • 1TB SSD
  • IR Webcam
  • Fingerprint reader
1M USB-C to USB-C cable (we have a USB-C dock but the prior user forgot the cable)
Office 2019 Pro Plus

Really overkill given he spends most of his time in email or other simple apps.

I've been looking at the new Lenovo equipment but I'm not seeing what I need to see. We've standardized on the X1 Yoga Gen 5 with the top-end i7, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD. Developer standard is the P53S with i7-8665U, 48GB of RAM, and 1TB SSD. That's the one I've got, and given that I'm always running at least one heavy local VM and multiple Docker containers, it's good.

Only thing that annoys me is that the biometric features don't work on Ubuntu Focal (or Pop!_OS 20.04).

I have no problem spending money on a good machine for work, but when he'd be fine with an i5 it kinda pisses me off.  I had the i7-10510U specced at first, and he "needed" the extra 100Mhz the 10610U provides.
