What are you up to?

In most internet fora folks would say something like "F in chat" for posts like yours, Jason. Indeed, at one point I'm sure we would have said it here. I can't pretend to understand how you're feeling, but I can at least offer my and my family's condolences and assure you that you've been in Julie and my thoughts during this time.

I got my Second covid Vaccine, and so far no extra limbs have grown, I haven't mutated into a metahuman. So I'm good.

Naah.

If I don't get some kind of mutation/super-power from this vaccine, I'm gonna be so disappointed.

So ... my Docker VM is running mariadb, portainer, influxdb, grafana, postgres, Homebridge, Ansible AWX (two awx, one postgres, one redis), and OpenEats (nginx, OpenEats API, and OpenEats web, which only runs when OpenEats is restarted). I found that Homebridge makes a metric shit-ton of DNS queries, which was throwing my Pi-Hole stats off. There were 29,804 DNS queries from Homebridge alone over the past 24 hours, which represents about 53% of all DNS queries. That's mildly annoying, so I chucked a very simple unbound container on there too and configured it to use Pi-Hole as its forwarder. Then I edited the netplan file to use 127.0.0.1 as the DNS server, stopped/disabled systemd-resolved, re-linked /etc/resolv.conf to /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf, applied the netplan config, restarted NetworkManager, and verified that /etc/resolv.conf pointed to 127.0.0.1 for DNS.

Since I made that change, the DNS lookups from the Docker VM went from >200 every 10 minutes to about 11 every 10 minutes.

I used the kciepluc/unbound-docker:latest container with the openssl package installed so I can use unbound-control. That way, "docker exec -it unbound unbound-control dump_cache" actually does something. Not sure why the Homebridge Docker image doesn't already contain Unbound ... maybe I should fix that and make a pull request LOL

Right now I'm ripping DVDs and chucking them on my Plex server. See, Julie is a fitness instructor now, and the company she instructs for sends out DVDs several times a year containing the choreography required for specific routines. We can't be bothered to plug a DVD player into any TVs, but we have Chromecasts on everything, so Plex it is.

Downloaded/playing the demo (OHSHI~!) for Outriders, it's pretty fun. Kinda feels like Grimdark Andromeda.

Like if Habitat-7 gave Ryder magic powers or whatever and then had to live on Pandora.

edit: And it's made by the people that did Bulletstorm, so the damage is... chunky.

Scene: I'm in one of the data center hot aisles running cables from some new servers to the top-of-rack switches, and running cross connects from one aisle to another. I reach out to the cart to grab another cable and there's nothing there, so I bend down to grab another one out of the box on the floor and I feel the familiar feeling of fabric giving way. Something has ripped.

I head over to the bathroom and, once I get there, I run my hand along the back of my pants. Nope, doesn't feel like there's a hole there, so I undo my belt and drop my pants to my knees to verify. Definitely no hole. So I stick my hand back there again and, instead of feeling fabric, I feel butt. Somehow, I have torn a MASSIVE hole in the ass of my underwear.

God dammit.

End scene.

Yup, I'm console gamer this generation as a result. It's a lot easier to track down an xbox/ps5 than all the parts I'd need to upgrade my computer right now. Cheaper too.

Glad I did a stupid and snagged a refurb RTX 2070 when I did Smile

At the moment I'm having bad dreams of the current cable management scenario at the data center. It's not bad by any means -- we have basket-type cable trays running above the cabinets for all data cables, and all power is under the floor -- but I am not a fan of how the cable trays pass through the cold aisle containment barriers. That bothers me a bit too much, as I'm not a fan of the cable trays passing through the containment barriers at all. Now that we're rebuilding the network using a slightly tweaked spine-leaf architecture, I have to run new cables and I have an opportunity to redesign the cable management architecture outside of the cabinets entirely.

There's a Safelite commercial that says "my car is my after-work decompression zone," as if sharing the road with the lowest common denominator in society for half an hour is stress-free. Fuck that, lying in bed in the dark and watching cartoons is my after-work decompression zone.
