Still enjoying Arkham City.

As far as DNF is concerned, that one is back on the back burner, because the underwater boss fight I'm currently at is one big pile of bullshit.

Trine
The Magicka DLC I didn't have.

I bought 7 games (and some DLC) for $64.28, which ain't bad at all.

Yeah, it just happened that I was so busy with holiday stuff I just didn't know about it until it was already too late. Pisser. Oh well I'm sure they'll put it on sale again soon, probably when I'm broke LOL.

Delayed post.

Portal 2 co-op is pretty fun, what I have played of it. Having another person there trying to solve the puzzle both helps and hurts, I suppose. A lot of the puzzles are "get the first robot over, then figure out a way to do the same thing, without the nice set up"; that's fine, but sometimes the first one over can't figure it out immediately, so... yeah. There's a lot of trial and error, usually leading to the death of one robot or the other, which is usually hilarious btw, and tempers may flare a bit. I was thankful that there wasn't voice chat attached, mostly because I'm sure my cousin and I would have been questioning each others' parentage. GLaDOS fills that gap amusingly enough though.

Over on the SP portion, I'm going back through the game with Commentary Mode on, and while some of the info is interesting, it seems like there isn't enough nodes actually around in any given level. It's still entertaining though, so I'm giving it a pass.

Finished P2's co-op, and it's amusing enough. Now all that's left is all the extra co-op levels and to finish the commentary. Since I've also beaten Arkham City's story mode (leaving a few side missions), I've decided to start up F.3.A.R. since I installed that a couple of weeks ago.

More of the same so far, but with a couple of tweaks here and there. Not liking how they've decided to toss out F.E.A.R.'s expansion packs' canonicity, but I guess giving Alma a (theoretical) happy ending wouldn't really be in line with the series.

Still F.3.A.R.in' it up, and it's... not bad.

I mean, it's not very scary at this point (third time in the same situation), but the setting is still creepy enough. They're relying on jump scares more often than I'd like, but every so often I'll get to a spot and be unnerved while I'm walking through. Little too much in the way of cannon fodder though, I think. Then again this is supposed to be more of a co-op thing, so that would make sense.

Finished F.3.A.R. as Point Man, it was a rather interesting ending... now I suppose I have to beat it as Paxton Fettel (since all missions are now unlocked for him) and see how different his ending is.

Playing through F.3.A.R as Fettel is a bit more fun; it's more "in your face" than as Point Man. Or at least, since I've beaten the game, I'm more sure of my skill. Fettel's abilities are different than PM's, but Fettel can "use" his whenever you possess someone. Well, other than the bullet time, that's Point Man-exclusive.

Basically what I'm saying is, making people explode from the inside is fun.

Went back to DNF to take another shot at the underwater level boss.. and beat him rather handily. As a result, that pretty much dumped me at the end game, which was pretty easy. Beating the game (and waiting through the credits) netted me a "bonus" cutscene, which was amusing. Plus, it unlocks a few options, such as God Mode, Infinite Ammo, and the like. Overall, I'd say it's worth the $5 I paid for it, but not much more. Duke-humor and killing aliens can only take you so far over too-long levels, unnecessary loading screens, and bad driving sections.

Afterwards, I started up Alice: Madness Returns, and I'm enjoying it so far. Unfortunately for some reason I can't select the Vorpal Blade as a weapon after I've received the Machine-gun Pepper Grinder.

Backlog is on hold because holy shit ME3 demo.

MP is so much better than SP too, and it's 4-person coop against the hordes. Best part? I'm running Infiltrator, and the cooldown for my Cloak is about the same as it takes to reload my sniper rifle. And I don't even care that all my accrued stats don't carry over to the full game.

Wait... Mass Effect 3 is multiplayer?

Sorry, again I haven't played any game in the series but I was under the impression they were heavily story driven single-player games. Hmmm...

I am getting so old and behind the times where gaming is concerned....

MP is a new addition as of ME3.

Story-wise, you don't play Commander Shepard, but one of the "grunts on the field". You can still choose from one of the 6 classes, but not all the races available for each class is unlocked. Those require a certain amount of luck and credits (from the end of each round) to get a box that unlocks them. That's also how you get weapon/item upgrades.

Decided to pepper my third run on ME3 (plus MP) with The Witcher, which is another story/decision-based game. Though combos are with swords instead of guns.

Played through ME3:Leviathan today. It adds so much more to the ending than the Extended Cut DLC did, I can say that with confidence. The last part of it, after the climactic battle ... made you think, but clarified much of the Mass Effect series, going all the way back to the first one in which you encounter the legend of the Leviathan of Dis while scanning random planets.

Still Borderlands 2, especially since the 2nd DLC has been released and I have the Season Pass.

That said, I jumped on the latest Humble Bundle, and got the following:

Darksiders
Metro 2033 (already own this one on Steam)
Red Faction: Armageddon
Company of Heroes (already own this "on" Retail)
Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts
Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor

And since I paid over the average...

Saints Row The Third

Updated my list to reflect the Humble Bundle purchase, and took off a couple that I had finished. Also mentally "gearing up" for Steam's Holiday Sale, which should start sometime in the next week or so.

edit: Finished Saints Row The Third, and went back to Borderlands 2 because I haven't run through the newest DLC "enough" yet. And because I am a badass.

Removed Alice: Madness Returns.

Not because I finished it mind you, but because there's some kind of weird-ass keybinding error in the game that stops you from being able to block/redirect projectile attacks. It sounds like it's specific to the KB/M combo (and not the 360 controller as often), so since I game with a KB/M and don't have a 360... I'm done.

I haven't gotten that far into the game, though i'm using a 360 controller anyway, but I found a potential fix.

Game Directory > AliceGame > Config > Default Input.ini

Find the line that says: +Bindings=(Name="E",Command="TriggerBlock true | OnRelease TriggerBlock false") and change the E to whichever letter you want to be block.

I've decided that 2013 is the Year of Getting Shit Done. Amongst other things, I will be killing my backlog. The first post in this thread was on November 14th, 2010, so I think it's time to kick some tires and light some fires.

I've got 40 games in my backlog, and 52 weeks in the year. Once a month, I am going to install 4 games, and spend a week playing each one of them. In order not to "play favorites", I am going to run alphabetically down the list, so I don't put off playing games that I think I won't like. The goal is to play all 40 games (plus any that get added along the way) by the end of the year, and therefore have some sort of opinion on them. A caveat to this is that I will spend a week playing these games, whether I like them or not, or whether I complete them of not. If I complete a game before the deadline, then so be it. If I do not, but still want to play the game, I will back up my save and uninstall anyway, to be continued later.

In this thread, I'll post what games I'm currently playing, and what I think of it. First up is the following 4 games:

January 4th to 10th: The Binding of Isaac
January 11th to 17th: Black Mesa
January 18th to 24th: Blur
January 25th to 31st: Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box

I decided to start on a Friday, since that will give me the weekend to really sink my teeth into a game, instead of as a 'last gasp' kind of thing.

Stay tuned for fun, games, and ragequitting!

The Binding of Isaac

Well, I initially described this with gameplay reminiscient of the original LoZ on the NES... and that's still true. What I've additionally determined is that there is a degree of difficulty not normally found in games today. Most games of the current and recent generations are decried as "too easy", with a fond remembrance of games from the 8 and 16-bit eras as "Nintendo Hard"; The Binding of Isaac does well to fit into that mold. In fact, the devs took it a step further and added an element of reset/randomness to it on top of that.

Basically, your character has one life to traverse all five(?) levels; if they fail, you lose all of your items and have to start over from the beginning. This, while punishing, I can understand, as it fits into the supposed ideal of what a character dying "should" be. Where the knife is twisted, so to speak, is that all of the levels, enemies, items, and boss characters are randomly generated (from a pool for each) for every level you encounter. That means you never really have the same experience twice, so while you may learn how to kill something, the next time you play, it may not even be there. It makes dying/respawning a larger issue than it would normally.

I'm going to keep playing (sporadically) for the next few days, but I doubt I'll be picking this one back up later. I also don't see myself ever beating the game either.
Thundercracker: ASRock H97M-ITXac Motherboard//Intel Core i7-4790K Processor @ 4.0GHz//16GB G.Skill PC3-12800//GIGABYTE RTX 2070 Super//Onboard 7.1 Sound//Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD//Lite-On DVD-RW//Fractal Design Focus G Case//24" Asus VH242H and 20" HP w2007 Monitors//Win10 Pro 64-Bit

Black Mesa

Well, while I technically have not played this game before, it's a fully upscaled HD version of the original Half-Life. Which I have played (and beaten) on multiple occasions. So the story in the game is not what I'm playing for, it's the gameplay mechanics and the visuals. And for the most part, they do not disappoint.

The crew behind the game did a few things that I think were for the better. Firstly, they took the levels themselves and made a coherent building/complex out of it. Instead of "rooms in space" like the original, the hallways and doors in Black Mesa were restitched so that they were actually connected, so that there's a fully fleshed out (and slightly more realistic) world in the game. The visuals themselves, while not stunning, definitely look a lot better than the original (and the HD pack later released), with models even taken from HL2 for a few characters.

The only real complaints I have about the game are holdovers from the original; the jumping and the weapons. Regular jumping isn't very high, so you end up having to crouch-jump for almost everything. This actually led me to some intense frustration at a couple of points, because your jump-timing is very important. Thankfully, the developer console was intact, so I just used noclip to get to the other side of the room. Yes, it's cheating, but I wanted to keep playing and not lose my sanity. The other complaint is that while the now-iconic crowbar is still available to the player, "melee attack" is not it's own button, just like in the original release. It's kind of like the same situation with DOOM3, and having to switch between the flashlight and the gun. Some of the guns also have a zoom/iron sight function, but I actually like that, despite having crosshairs in the middle of the screen.

So yeah, I had fun playing the game over the weekend, and I'll continue to play it up to the deadline. If I don't beat it before then, I will definitely come back to it later.
