Yep, you read correctly. Lucas himself announced it earlier today at the Celebration V event. All six films will be released this next spring for the 35th Anniversary of A New Hope. They're even throwing in an old deleted scene from Return of the Jedi, which they showed at the event.

So what's the excitement over the new scene, is it because it's new or is there some kind of significance to it that I'm missing?

I would say a pretty good significance, cause i feel it ties into the book "shadows of the empire" as in the book it covers luke finding obi-wans old journals about the jedi order back on tatooine and instructions on building a lightsaber.
Meh. I am pretty much 'over' Star Wars. I'll probably get these once I get a blu-ray player, but only because it's the 'geek' thing to do.
