A top-of-the-range OnePlus 6 is $200 less than the S8 Active ... but OnePlus is still pretty shady in my mind. The Essential is dirt cheap now, but there's no guarantee they'll be around tomorrow. Google's announcing the Pixel 3 soon, but it'll probably be expensive as sin, because the low prices died with the Nexus name.

Apple's coming out with the iPhone XR, which is $100 cheaper than the Galaxy S8 Active.

I'm an Android fanboy, but flagships are getting a bit ridiculous in price if I can say "a brand-new iPhone is cheaper than a previous-generation Galaxy S8."
Several months later and I STILL have a love / hate relationship with my S8+. LOVE the hardware - it's definitely a premium experience.

HATE HATE HATE the software. Samsung's UI is annoying on a good day, and there aren't many good days. Between Bixby (yes, I know you can disable the button now) and just the general ass hattery of the OS and you constantly feel like the phone is fighting you every bit of the time you're using it. And no hope for a custom ROM like Lineage since Samsung uses their own Exynos SoC in the USA instead of a Snapdragon.

And yes, I'm back! The NoxBox just got unpacked and setup tonight - mainly because I had a web client bitching at me for not doing their updates July or August.

That's another one of the reasons I didn't go with the S9 ... or stay with the S7 Edge, for that matter. Sure the S7 Edge didn't have Bixby, but the whole point of the S7 Edge -- the edge display -- was a right pain in the dick. There were so many accidental touches on it that I just couldn't use the damn thing.

When I saw that the S8 was only available with edge displays I decided nope, screw that. Sure, AT&T had the S8 Active, but even now that thing's more expensive than an iPhone XR, and I didn't have AT&T at the time. That's why I went to the LG V20 which ... yeah, love-hate relationship with that one. Sure, it had the Snapdragon 820, and it ran well with Nova Launcher (the LG modifications aren't that bad), but the always-on secondary display turned the flashlight on when the phone was in my pocket, and the quad DAC's audio quality improvements were not all that noticeable. Granted, I have pretty shitty hearing.

Also, the rumor that the Pixel 3 will come with 4GB of RAM is kind of silly ... the base OnePlus 6 has the same processor as the Pixel 3 but 6GB of RAM, and the 128/256GB versions have 8GB. OxygenOS apparently only has some light touches, and hot damn, the phone upgraded from Oreo to Pie less than 24 hours after I took it out of the box. Yes, there are some compromises when it comes to display and camera, but this phone is fast as hell.

For shits and giggles I decided to mess with my SGS4G, and factory restore it.

This decision was both great, and terrible. Great, because I immediately got a wave of nostalgia with it's OG startup and apps, just seeing where tech was back in... 2011. Terrible because I can't even access Google Play (which means no updating anything), and the built-in browser isn't very compatible with websites. Ah well.

So hilariously, the built-in browser uses the YouTube mobile site like a slower version of the current YouTube app. What makes it even better, is that the browser is so old, it doesn't know it's supposed to check servers that aren't YouTube; like you know, the ad servers.

Also the only browser that I can install that's even remotely modern is Opera Mini. Almost literally every other app that I could possibly think about installing requires Android 4.0.

I'm running Gingerbread 2.3.6.

I've started getting the different parts for my Halloween costume. Tried on all of the parts I currently have, and it looks awesome as-is, but I need black pants, shoe polish, and that one last part that I won't name because it may give clues.

The last part came in, and it looks so awesome. Holy crap.

In other news, I got a new computer chair. Threw it on the roof of my Civic (in the roof basket, of course), secured it with straps, and drove down the street. Hell yeah.

Also, I've containerized a couple of things. My Squid proxy is no longer a full VM, but an unprivileged LXC container. I've also removed Unbound from the Pi-Hole server and installed two instances of it: one on the bare metal server, and one in another container. I may have allocated too much RAM to the Unbound container ... it has a cap of 3 GB, but after 24 hours of uptime it's using 140 MB total. Same with the Squid VM ... though I haven't run SARG on it for the day yet.

We've know for a while now that Lucas has had an imaginary monkey friend named Doom, but tonight he told us that Doom has a son named Doom II. I'm so proud of him even though he doesn't have a clue what he did.
