Speaking of the NUCs, I've always ignored them as grandma / kids machines. Useful for web browsing and office tasks with maybe some HD video usage as an HTPC.

The new Hades Canyon NUCs that will be coming out change that though. An AMD Vega mobile GPU with onboard HBM... supposed to handily beat the Nvidia mobile 1060 part. (1060 Max Q or whatever the hell they call it)

They're gonna start at $800 though....

Yes, those gaming NUCs made me raise one eyebrow, especially after the mildly ridiculous attempts made by the likes of Gigabyte in their really fat Brix machines. Willing to consider them as an option to recommend to someone who doesn't want to go to the trouble of assembling all the things, but at the moment, my 4930k/64GB/1070 are plenty for what I need.

Since I already had all the stuff out I decided to start that spare parts build I had originally planned. Motherboard, CPU, cooler, and RAM all in. Tomorrow morning I'll dig for a PSU, storage, and GPU.

Delicious. That's my only beef with the case, by the way -- AIO tubes are always smooshing up against the roof of the case unless you orient the fittings on the block just so. At least, that's the situation with the TT Water 3.0 Performer C.

Gave myself a haircut. Bare blade with the clippers, then the ol' Merkur 37C to even it all out, then the 34C to make it smooth. Now my head is shiny.

Just added my third Zigbee light to my Home Assistant setup. First light is in our crawlspace, second & third lights will go in the boy's room. They will be controlled by two Amazon Dash buttons.

All this is powered by Hass.io, Dashio and a couple of other plugins.

It LIVES!

I spent almost four hours last night / this morning trying to get an EFI based install of Windows 10 going on this guy. Unfortunately I ended up having to go with a traditional legacy install . There's a bug in Gigabyte boards of this era (2010 - 2011) that use their 'Hybrid UEFI' BIOS. (Think a traditional old blue screen Award BIOS with some early EFI bits underneath) When booting from Windows install media specifically setup for EFI, it will get stuck at 'Loading operating system...' when trying to boot from said media. That's with a bootable USB drive with a GPT partition setup instead of traditional MBR. I never could find a way around it...

On other Sandy Bridge / Ivy Bridge era boards Gigabyte eventually released full on UEFI firmware / BIOSes that totally didn't have this issue, like on my trusty old Z68XP-UD3. I guess they didn't see fit to release one for the H61M-USB3 though.

I also find it extremely ironic that this board has 'USB3' in the model number but doesn't have a front panel USB3 header.... nope.... just two USB3 ports on the rear IO.

I realized I was a bit 'behind', so I just doubled my queue over on Crunchyroll. Since the major (or minor) networks generally don't premiere new episodes of stuff over the summer, I use that time to both catch up on the stuff I otherwise missed from the previous season, and watch a fuckload of anime.

Not all of the shows are going to be winners of course, but I'm hoping a good chunk of them will be. I won't find out for another couple of months though.
