I did chuckle when I saw that video.

Hmm ... Backblaze is unhappy with me for some reason. It hasn't backed up my machine since October 20.

Yeah, I'll bet... lol.

There's a lot more where that came from too... I'm trying to figure out how to salvage some sort of video from the footage I have.

It didn't scare me away from modding though. The new 7700k appears to be a good clocking chip, but as usual the TIM Intel used under the heatspreader sucks ass.

No more shifty razor blade de-lidding, no more super glue. Tomorrow I'll be taking delivery on a finely machined 'Rockit 88' delidding / relidding tool made specifically for Kaby Lake, Skylake, and I think it will work on Coffee Lake too. I also ordered some Permatex high temp red RTV silicone gasket maker (the same stuff Kyle Bennett swears by for re-lidding). And I have enough Coollaboratories Liquid Metal Ultra for one more application.

Am I crazy? Fucking probably.

Also, the Thermaltake 'Floe' Riing 240 CLC cooler is the tits. It's gorgeous and works well sofar. The software sucks ass though...

I have the TT Floe Riing cooler and fans set to vary the LED colors based on thermals now, which is uber cool.

The LEDs on my Asus STRIX 1080 will do that too, I just wish they used the same color scheme.

The Strix varies from bright green when it's cool to deep red when it's toasty (with shades of yellow and orange in between).

The TT Riing fans go from deep blue when it's cold to deep red when it's cookin'.

Fun BL2 Fact: The BeeHawk is one of the rare gear combos that was never patched. So every pellet the Sandhawk fires has the full amount of damage that the Bee shield can provide.

(It's my go-to on my Maya Build.)

Unrelated: The 'turn off your ad-blocker' warning on The Weather Channel is significantly nicer if NoScript isn't running.

This 7700k appears to be one hell of an overclocker. It will do 5ghz easy at just under 1.4v, but the stress temps are in the mid 90s.

The Rockit 88 delid / relid tool arrives in today's mail.

I bet the load temps drop at least 20 degrees after delidding and relidding...

The balls on this one, man ...

I'm still hesitating to push the ol' 2600k above 4.6. I can go as high as 4.8 without causing stability problems, but I strongly prefer to keep the stress temps below 75 degrees.

Shoot, I don't get nervous until it goes past 90C. Technically they are rated to handle temps that high, but I still don't like seeing it go above 90.

My old 2600k is still chugging right along at 4.6ghz in the family room / kids gaming PC, and it's run at that speed nearly 24/7 since I bought it in 2011-ish. And it's amazing how well it compares to the current gen stuff... Intel really has let IPC and core count stagnate. I wish I could find a replacement for the tempermental as fuck Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 that said CPU sits in. Ideally a Z77 board since they ironed out a lot of the irritability inherent in the Z68 chipset.

That 2600k will actually do up to 4.8ghz as I recall, but the temps got too high and I had to pump the voltage way up for very little gain. 4.6 was the happy medium.

If only you didn't heed a H97 board.....

The AsRock board I have is really good for OCing this 2600k, as long as you use the wizard in the firmware. If you start tweaking beyond that, it gets supremely fussy. The only reason I keep mentioning 4.8 is that it's the maximum supported by that wizard

At work I have switched from a laptop (i7-7500U, 32GB RAM, 256GB M.2) back to a desktop (i7-4930k, 64GB RAM, and an assortment of SATA drives). I was somewhat unhappy with the display output options: the laptop has HDMI and VGA that are spaced far enough apart to be able to use both, but 2560x1440 + 1920x1080 + 1920x1080 does not make me particularly happy. I tried attaching two 4k displays to a DisplayLink 6950-based USB 3.0 display adapter, but I couldn't get 60Hz consistently at 4k.

The desktop, on the other hand, has a GeForce GTX 960 that's outputting three 4k displays at 60Hz. So ............... yeah. I'm rocking three 4k displays -- a 28", a 40", and a 28", in that order. Desktop's quiet too -- the graphics card is the same as my MSI 970 100ME, but it's the 960 non-ME, so the fans sit idle unless the card is being hammered. I've got an Arctic Cooling Liquid Freezer 120 on the CPU and am running it at stock speeds, with another Arctic Cooling fan on the top of the case and whatever fan came with the case (Corsair Carbide 200R) up front. The machine itself is on my desk behind the monitors ... only problem I have is getting to the USB ports. I have a 7-port USB 2.0/3.0 hub at home, so I'll just take that, hook it up, and stick it on my desk under the right monitor.
