I have successfully grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat.

The S3 is not only back up and running, but I found the one fucking ROM that can be loaded even with a locked bootloader, and it's a minimal/no bloatware iteration that is pretty customizable. So that's nice. It's still KitKat, but I'll take that over having to find a currently available/updated Jellybean ROM.

Though I suppose none of that answers the question, WTF do I do with it now?

I am in Florida.

We got in yesterday around 19:30. Took us 20 hours and 10 minutes. We obviously had to stop for gas, but we also had to stop a couple times for food. I didn't realize the Illinois electronic toll collection transponder (I-Pass, which is EZ-Pass compatible) is apparently incompatible because Florida's system is not interoperable with EZ-Pass, so we had to avoid the turnpike. Also, had no cash and don't feel like sending a check. Ended up having to drive through the absolute shadiest parts of Ocala to get to our destination.

First thing we did when we got here, after unpacking, was go to the Wal-Mart to get some groceries. Holy shit, that has to be the busiest Wal-Mart in this entire hemisphere, and I could count the Florida license plates in the parking lot on one hand.

Also, we ordered pizza from Giordano's, which is a Chicago pizza chain we order from at home as well. Their crust recipe is different here. Not sure how I feel about that, but at least we have pizza.

Encountered a palmetto bug this morning. Never saw one before. Sucked it up with a vacuum and chucked it in the bin outside.

Now, we're going to hit the pool. Glad we didn't shell out for the heating, since the pool is pretty warm. Not used to the whole "you need to press this button before you go outside or an alarm will sound and the police will come because they think your kid's drowning" button thing yet.

<edit> Also ... wtf @ no mini-USB cables at that Wal-Mart. How the fresh hell am I gonna get the pictures off my camera?

Wednesday I upgraded to a LG G7 ThinQ in Raspberry Rose, Thursday Heidi has her hernia fixed, Friday I upgraded Heidi to the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (to expensive to get the 9) and of course Leighton got a cold. My mom is here helping due to the surgery so I'm going to lay down for a bit before she goes so I can keep the kiddos alive this afternoon while Heidi rests.

Looks like a bad card reader driver made its way onto Julie's laptop. Downgraded it and now I can get the pictures.

Testing out a new set of BT earbuds that claim "10+ hours of battery life!!!!1".

Closing in on hour 8, no issues. Nice.

edit: Aaaand dies just shy of 8hrs. Still better than the fake Razer.

"My tablet's broken."

Nope! Just completely drained battery that also loves the juice. As in, saw it draining faster than some of the cables were trying to charge the thing. Also shitty enough to where there's almost no reason to root it (no custom recoveries or ROMs out there), did anyway though, just so I could toss on an adblocker.

...did someone say adblocker? Now available as a Docker image as well ... you know, in case you don't have a dedicated machine (which can be amd64-based, arm architecture not required) but you have one that can run Docker (which means Windows 10 ... right?).

I threw it at a VM running Ubuntu 16.04 and it's been great. Survived an in-place upgrade to 18.04 as well. I also have unbound installed on it, so it caches DNS queries locally and forwards everything else directly to the root servers (there's a cron job that runs every month to fetch the latest root hints).

<edit> Now installing a foreman server. "alias fucking='sudo'" is the best.

I don't know what any of that means.

Would I just grab a Pi and toss that on there on a connection between my modem and router or something?

The Pi would sit on the network just like any other machine (cabled in, because fuck wireless). It'd take over DNS from your router -- so you'd need to configure the Pi with a static IP, and then configure the router to hand out the Pi's IP as the DNS server. You could also configure the Pi to handle DHCP if you want, but that's not required.

That whole thing with unbound isn't really a requirement. I just like that nobody's getting my DNS queries, except for the root servers

Finished Attack on Titan season 1. Disappointed that season 2 isn't on Netflix yet ... but no problem, I found another way to watch that and the currently-in-progress season 3
