I'm jealous of the snow. I am seriously considering pulling one of the desktop form factor boxes I have at home into Plex duty. Its a Core 2 Duo, should work a little better than my HP MicroServer N40L.

Well Plex is a lot of the reason I decided to build the box. I'll have to see if the Q9550 is powerful enough to do on-the-fly transcoding via Plex, if not I may have to throw more parts at it. I have a couple of Sandy Bridge era CPUs in my collection now, an i3-2120, i5-2400, and another i5-2500k... but I'd have to find an mATX board and more DDR3 for them.

Honestly, enthusiast level LGA1155 boards are still stupid expensive seven years later for some damn reason. If I do it I'll grab another Dell board from a Vostro 260 / Inspiron 620. They're about $35 - 40 on Ebay and the one I pulled from a Dell machine for our kid's gaming / guest usage PC is pretty great sofar.

My AMD N40L can, I think the Q9550 can.

Depends on the load you want to throw at it. I was able to handle 3 simultaneous 1080p streams on my 2500k, but I never tried pushing it any harder because there was no need.

Olympic Opening Ceremonies were pretty good, so if you get a chance to watch them tonight, you should do so.

If there's an alternate audio feed that cuts out whatever morons NBC decides to put on it, I'm all ears ...

The NBC Sports app (via cable sub) had a livestream with no announcers/commentary on it. It was just the event itself, with any speaking coming from the people in the stadium during the event.

Well yeah, but the 2500k and Q9550 are leagues apart... stlll, I'd bet the Q9550 would handle a couple of simultaneous streams. But I have absolutely zero experience with Plex so I wouldn't know. I'll be getting a crash course soon I suppose!

The file server / NAS box seems to be doing great sofar. Network performance is good, although the Realtek Gigabit NIC on the old Asus P5QPL-AM doesn't seem to support jumbo frames (an MTU of 9,000) so I'm trying to find a cheap Intel NIC to throw in the box.

I'm really digging Unraid sofar too. I guess I'll eventually be ponying up the cash for a basic license at the very least.

I'm going to have to start saving up the cash to get some more HDDs to throw in as parity drives as well.

Sorting through my 'PC hardware' gorilla shelves in the garage, tossing junk and trying to decide what to keep. I have a big box of hardware in the 'keep' pile sofar:

i5-2500k (Sandy Bridge)
i5-2400 (Sandy Bridge)
i3-2120 (Sandy Bridge, dual core with HT)
Core 2 Quad Q9600
Pentium E5700
Zalman CPU cooler for LGA115x
Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P
Gigabyte Z68X-UD3
Gigabyte P35-DS3L
A bag of misc DDR2 DRAM (All of them are 2GB and 1GB sticks I think)
A bag of misc DDR DRAM (512MB and 1GB sticks, meh)
An ASUS Geforce GTX 660 DirectCU II Edition
An EVGA Geforce 570
An EVGA GTX 280 (My personal card from back in the day, the infamous 'hovercraft cooling mod' one)
Thermaltake Water 3.0 RGB 240mm AIO / CLC cooler
A box full of smaller capacity SATA hard drives, 160GB, 250GB, 500GB, 750GB, etc)
One lonely old PATA Seagate Diamondmax 10 just in case I ever need one for some reason
Various tids and bits...

I've thrown away tons in the last week though:

Several Dell / HP machines from the LGA775 era that I didn't want to bother keeping. I pulled the CPUs, RAM, and DVD burners out of them all plus most of the case screws and SATA cables.
A couple of REALLY old boxes, like Pentium 2 and 3 era stuff. I didn't even save anything from those.
An Antec SOLO case. Yes, I really junked it. I'm sick of it and no case has ever frustrated me like the Solo. Silent, solid, but I swear a team of brain dead monkeys designed the damn thing. I actually did a Youtube video about junking it and how much it's pissed me off over the years.
A Dell Latitude CPI laptop that cost $3500 in 1998. It had horribly cracked LCD hinges, but it still booted into Windows 98 fine and the battery even seemed to hold a charge.
A whole bunch of shit for the above laptop. Cardbus 10baseT card, 56k modem, floppy drive, sealed Dell Win95 package, power brick... I kept the rather beefy and expensive looking Targus laptop bag it was all in.
